Conceptual Design, Prototyping, User Testing, Industrial Design, Detailed Design
As part of an initiative to make birth control options more accessible in Ethiopia, World Vision Canada was looking to manufacture an
experimentally proven device, called the SubQ Assist. This is a task-shifting device used for accurate contraceptive implant administration by community health workers, as opposed to the current methodology which requires administration by a skilled healthcare provider. EDL was contracted to adapt the SubQ Assist to allow for clear visibility when administering the subcutaneous injection, and manufacture a small batch of these devices for use in a clinical trial. The resulting design featured a SubQ made of clear polycarbonate, paired with a custom arm band featuring snap hooks and adjustable Velcro straps for securely mounting the device onto a patient’s arm.
